A number of the members from our Martial Arts centre in Basingstoke were chosen to attend the Basingstoke and Deane Sports Awards 2013.

The Sports Awards are organised by Basingstoke Local Sports Council and in particular Kevin Laing and Sue Hillyard in conjunction with a host of other organisations including Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, The Apollo Hotel, Basingstoke Sports Centre, Basingstoke and Deane Community Leisure Trust and Destination Basingstoke.

The aim of the Sports Awards is to celebrate sporting success and achievement in the Borough of Basingstoke and Deane from it’s many talented athletes.

The competition is always fierce with most of the top clubs in the Basingstoke entering various categories. This includes Basingstoke Gymnastics club, Basingstoke Bluefins Swimming club, Basingstoke Ice Hockey club, Totally Tennis, Basingstoke and Mid Hants Athletics club, Basingstoke Rugby Football Club and

We had a number of people chosen to attend to represent the club. They included:-


A – Junior Sportswoman of the year – JESS MULLER
B – Junior Sportsman of the year – EDWARD VAN MEERKERK

C – Senior Sportswoman of the year – LINDSEY ANDREWS
D – Coach of the year – BRYAN ANDREWS
E – Sports Club of the year
F – Junior and Senior Teams of the year

We were also very proud to have a number of winners from the club, including the following


1 – Senior Disabled Sportsperson of the year – GAVIN DOWNEY
2 – Men’s Veterans Sportsperson of the year – MARK NEVOLA
3 – Junior Volunteer of the year – EDWARD VAN MEERKERK
4 – Scholarship award – GAVIN DOWNEY

There were many other notable winners, I’d like to particularly congratulate our friends Kevin McAuslin Crine’s Karate student, Jim Feighery-Murphy for winning the Junior Sportman of the year category, Claire Williams from Basingstoke Gymnastics for Coach of the Year and Paul Temple also from Basingstoke Gymnastics for service to sport over a long period. 

Congratulations also go to Paula Clarke, Emma Baldry and Susan Pogmore, who were invited to the Mayors Reception to celebrate their work as volunteer coaches.





Winchester Sportswoman of the Year 2012

Winchester Sports Awards, Olympic Bronze Medallist Sally Walton, Sportswoman of the Year 2012. Karate BasingstokeKarate Gold Medallist from Basingstoke, Lindsey Andrews was one of three shortlisted sportswomen for the Winchester and District Sports Awards 2012.

The Winchester District Sport and Physical Activity Alliance (SPAA) held the fifth annual sports awards at Winchester Guildhall on Wednesday 5th December with the host for the evening Andy Steggall from Sky Sports News and Meridian Tonight.

Lindsey has had a good year with numerous competition successes, most notably being selected for the Karate England All Styles Squad and then coming 5th in the WUKF European Championships in June and then becoming the British Champion in September. These helped her to clinch the title of Winchester Sportswoman of the Year 2012.

Sally Walton  from GB Hockey – London 2012 Olympic Bronze Medalist was at the ceremony and gave a motivational talk on success and what it had taken her to go from a beginner in Hockey through to County success to becoming an Olympic medallist.

Basingstoke and Deane Sports Coach of the Year 2012

Basingstoke Sports Awards, Local Sports Council, Sportswoman of the Year, Coach of the Year, Basingstoke and Deane, Basingstoke Sports Council, Kevin Laing,Congratulations to the Shin Gi Tai Coaching Team at Basingstoke and Deane’s 2012 Sports Awards.

Our borough is fortunate to have a very strong sporting community, which is often demonstrated in competition.  The borough council, Local Sports Council and Basingstoke Sports Trust all play a big part in recognising and supporting this at the annual Sports Awards.
The annual Sports Awards are coordinated by the Local Sports Council and are hosted by the Apollo Hotel.  The awards ceremony celebrates the achievements of clubs, teams, coaches, officials and individuals involved in sport locally


Chief Instructor and Senior Coach Bryan Andrews, was nominated for and won Basingstoke and Deane’s Professional Sports Coach of the Year 2012 title.

Katherine White was nominated for and won Basingstoke and Deane’s Voluntary Sports Coach of the Year 2012 title.

Lindsey Andrews was nominated and came 3rd in the Ladies Veteran 2012 category. The winner of this event was Powerlifter Jean Maton.


Well done also to club members Isabel, Edward, Spardha, Harry and Gavin who were also nominated for various categories in the Adults and Junior sections and have been invited to the mayors reception next week.


Thanks to Kevin Laing and Sue Hillyard from the Local Sports Council for their hardwork in managing the Sports Awards and also for Amy Sambell and Sue Parker from Basingstoke and Deane Council for all their support.
