Train together, learn together, have fun together

As a family focussed Martial Arts club, we think we have a good understanding of the needs of parents and the needs of the children we teach Martial Arts to.

Our Family Martial Arts class gives parents, carers and grandparents the chance to step onto the mats alongside their children. Instead of watching from the side, you learn the same techniques, play the same games and work towards your belts together.

It’s quality time that’s active, fun and a little bit competitive. Children love the chance to beat the grown-ups at something and teach them a thing or two, and adults are often surprised by how much they enjoy it.

Every Sunday from 10:30 to 11:30am, the class is just for families. Families with children aged 10 and over can also train together in our Traditional Karate class on Friday evenings.

Even if you don’t train yourself, we want you involved. We run regular open weeks where parents can join their child’s usual class, and families are always welcome to come and cheer each other on at gradings

What families learn together in Martial Arts classes?

Adults and children learn the same techniques from Karate, Kung Fu and Judo, side by side. As parents ourselves, and as qualified martial arts coaches, we choose carefully what’s taught in a family class. Some techniques from our adult classes aren’t suitable for younger students, either because of how children’s bodies develop or because of the nature of the technique, so everything in the family class is safe and appropriate for every age.

Partner work is part of every class, carefully controlled and matched to each pair’s age and size. Family members work towards their belts and can grade all the way to black belt, with gradings held outside the class.

Fun for every age

The focus is on fun and fitness, while still learning real martial arts. Everyone practises the same techniques, and our coaches adapt them for each person’s age, fitness and body, so a 5-year-old and a 65-year-old can train side by side, each at the right level.

We also play games designed to build teamwork and bring out a bit of friendly competition. They’re a great way to get fit and practise martial arts skills without it feeling like hard work, and we suspect the adults enjoy them even more than the children do.

Equipment for all ages

Both children and adults enjoy using our equipment.

We provide separate sets of pads and equipment sized for adults and children. Some drills are done individually and others with a partner, often parent and child together. It’s a fun way for adults to stay fit, and it helps children build their skills in an engaging way.

Family members are also welcome to train in our other classes. Children can join their age-specific class, and adults can join our adult martial arts classes, Tai Chi and more. Come and try a free family taster class at our academy in Daneshill, Basingstoke.

Family Martial Arts: Your Questions Answered

Here are answers to the questions families most often ask about our Sunday Family Martial Arts class in Basingstoke. If you would like to talk about anything else, our coaching team will be happy to help.

What is a family martial arts class?

It's a class where adults and children train together on the mats, learning the same techniques side by side. It's a fun way to get fit, spend quality time together and support each other's progress, and children love the chance to show the grown-ups how it's done.

When is the family class?

Family Martial Arts runs every Sunday from 10:30 to 11:30am at our full-time academy at Daneshill Central, Basingstoke RG24 8NU. See the full timetable.

Can we train together on other days?

Yes. Families with children aged 10 and over can also train together in our Traditional Karate class on Fridays from 6:00 to 7:00pm, which is open to students from age 10 to adults.

Who can join the family class?

The class is for an adult and a child training together. That could be a parent, carer or grandparent with their child or grandchild. Families can bring more than one adult and more than one child, so siblings, both parents or grandparents are all welcome.

What age can children join?

Children can join the Sunday family class from age 4, and the Friday Traditional Karate class from age 10. There is no upper age limit for adults.

Do adults need any experience or fitness?

No. Most adults start as complete beginners. Our coaches adapt every technique to suit each person's age, fitness and body, so whether you're 25 or 65, you'll train at a level that's right for you.

What will we learn?

Adults and children learn the same techniques from Karate, Kung Fu and Judo, adapted for each age. Classes mix technique practice with team games and work on pads and equipment, with separate sets sized for adults and children. Everything taught is chosen to be safe and suitable for younger students.

Is there any sparring?

Partner work is part of every class, but it is carefully controlled and matched to each pair's age and size. Children who want more sparring can also join their age-specific class.

Can we grade for belts?

Yes. Adults and children in the family class work towards their belts and can go all the way to black belt. Gradings take place outside the Sunday class, and other family members are encouraged to come along and cheer each other on.

Can a child or adult come to the family class on their own?

The family class is for adults and children training together. Children who want to train on their own can join our age-specific children's classes, and adults can join our adult martial arts classes. Many families do both.

How much does family martial arts cost?

Each person who trains has their own membership. We'll explain the options for your family at your free taster class, so you can decide what suits you best with no obligation.
