What is Karate?

Karate is a traditional Japanese Martial Art, which is very suitable for women to train in. It incorporates a number of different stances, blocks, kicks and strikes that you will learn to perform. Karate-Te translates as ‘empty hand’ and is well known as a method of self defence.

You will learn how to perform these Karate moves in a slow and controlled way to build your skills up before you start to increase the intensity of your Karate training.

Training safely

We will teach your the fundamental skills of Karate to help you develop both your physical techniques and also your knowledge. We train safely using our wide selection of focus pads and bags to practice our techniques along with partnerwork for self defence practice. You will also work with a partner on a number of sparring drills to help improve your reflexes and skills. The last part of Karate is working on Kata which is a formal set sequence of moves designed to teach you techniques and skills for self defence to impart key principles. Our key focus for all coaches and members is to train safely to minimise the risk of injury.

Should I get fit first?

Not at all. When new members start Ladies Karate training with us there are different fitness levels and everyone’s body is a different. As members progress in their training, they find their fitness increases and they get effective results. In our club, members work at a pace and level that is appropriate for them, you can go as hard or as easy or as you want to.

Our female Karate coaches will work with you to help you customise your personal training to suit your needs and capabilities. In time the training you do in your Women’s Karate class will help you to get stronger, fitter and more flexible. You’ll accrue other benefits as well, including better coordination, muscle tone, balance and mindfulness as you become more aware of your own body.

Will I learn self-defence skills?

Yes you will. Most definitely! Hopefully you’ll never have to use the skills that we teach you. However, our goal is to teach you the knowledge and skills to be to avoid a potentially dangerous situation, so that a physical confrontation, wherever possible, is not necessary.
The biggest ‘self defence win’ for all of us, is a focus on a healthy mind and body. Ladies only Karate helps our members to defeat physical inactivity and to maintain good mental health.

I’m not very sporty. Does that matter?

Not in the slightest. This is exactly how many of our members who started in our women’s Karate classes would describe themselves before they started training with us. So, you won’t be alone.

After training for a little while, you’ll be astounded at how much you’ve improved your skills. Our experienced coaches or ‘Sensei’ are trained to coach everyone at a level that is suitable for that individual, so even the most uncoordinated person can become a Martial Artist and who knows, perhaps one day you could be the Sensei.

I’ve never done Karate before.

That’s great, you are like the majority of our new members. We love teaching beginners in our Ladies only Karate class. The hardest part is taking that first step and then you’ll have proven to yourself that you can meet challenges head on and win.

Our coaches are there with you, every step of the way. They all started as White belts with Shin Gi Tai Martial Arts and are now Black Belts and fully qualified Martial Arts coaches.

The hardest part is stepping through the door. Open the door to your future and come and try a free Karate lesson with us in Basingstoke.
